DA to go to court over unconstitutional Nkandla report

At this afternoon’s sitting of the National Assembly (NA), the ANC used its majority to rubberstamp the Minister of Police, Nathi Nhleko’s unconstitutional report into the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s private home at Nkandla.

The DA appealed to the ANC to vote on conscience, and respect the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.  The ANC’s failure to do so is yet another indication that it does not care about the fight against corruption. They care only about protecting President Jacob Zuma at all costs.

The DA has now exhausted every possible avenue available to us in Parliament to ensure that the remedial actions taken by the Public Protector in her report on Nkandla are enforced. 

We therefore have no choice but to take this matter to the High Court. I have accordingly instructed our lawyers to initiate legal proceedings to nullify the Minister of Police’s report, and to force President Zuma to comply with the Public Protector. Further details on our case will be provided to the media tomorrow.

The DA will not allow for Constitution of the Republic to be bulldozed over so that corruption can be swept under the carpet. President Zuma must be held to account, and we will take every step possible to make sure this happens.
