Robert McBride to be charged with fraud and defeating ends of justice

IPID head, along with Matthew Sesoko and Innocent Khuba, being investigated by Hawks CATS unit

McBride and 2 others to be charged with fraud, defeating ends of justice

Cape Town - Independent Police Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride will be charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice along with two colleagues, Netwerk24 reports.

McBride, Matthew Sesoko and Innocent Khuba are being investigated by the Hawks's Crimes Against the State (Cats) unit.

The unit's mandate is to investigate cases such as terrorism which could pose a threat to South Africa.

McBride said, however, they have not committed any crime.

"Our lawyers have not been contacted, but we have received an SMS from Brigadier [Nyameka] Xaba [head of the unit].

"I am not sure why the unit would investigate fraud - perhaps to add gravitas and sensation... I am being charged because I did my job.

"This is a misuse of power in the first degree. It is also possibly illegal," he said.

Charges against McBride, Sesoko and Khuba relate to their investigation of Lt. General Anwa Dramat, the former head of the Hawks.

Dramat was accused of involvement in the illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals.

McBride found him innocent.

The findings of the last report that McBride signed differed greatly from an earlier report in which Dramat was found guilty.

McBride has maintained that the earlier report did not take all the facts into account.

McBride, Seseko and Khuba must present themselves to the Hawks offices in Pretoria on Tuesday after the National Prosecuting Authority decided to prosecute them on Friday.
