Defence minister says she flew into town on a SAAF helicopter in order to assess and deal with a public security matter

QUESTION FOR WRITTEN REPLY

1743. Mr D J Maynier (DA) to ask the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans:

(1) (a) What was the purpose of her recent visit to Tlokwe and (b) when did the visit take place;

(2) what were the (a) names and (b) positions of the persons (i) who accompanied her on the helicopter and (ii) whom she met in Tlokwe;

(3) was the use of the helicopter approved by the Secretary of Defence; if so, when; if not, why not;

(4) (a) what type of helicopter was used and (b) what was the total (i) cost

and (ii) breakdown of the cost of using the helicopter?

REPLY

(1) The purpose of the visit was to assess and deal with a public security matter which included, inter alia a protest action by members of the community

(2) The Minister was accompanied by staff members of the Ministry, and she met with various community leaders at the Municipal facility in Tlokwe.

(3) The use of the helicopter had the necessary approval as required by Standard operating procedure of the Department of Defence and the South African National Defence Force.

(4) The details of the costs of the use of the helicopter is still not quantified by the South African Air Force and has not been presented to the Ministry.
