Impeachment of Zuma one step closer – John Steenhuisen

DA Chief Whip says his party’s motion will be debated on September 1 2015

One step closer to impeaching Zuma

20 August 2015

The National Assembly Programme Committee (NAPC) this morning agreed to debate the DA’s motion of impeachment against President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday, 1 September 2015.

This takes South Africa closer to holding President Zuma accountable for violating the principle of the separation of powers, the Constitution and directly ignoring a court order by aiding and abetting wanted human rights violator, Sundanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Al-Bashir’s state-aided escape represents a clear violation of President Zuma's oath to "obey, observe, uphold and maintain the Constitution and all other law of the Republic," and serve as nothing less than grounds for his removal from office in terms of section 89(1)(a) of the Constitution.

In order for the motion to pass, it will need one-third of the National Assembly’s support. The DA will therefore work with all political parties which believe in upholding the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution.

The time has come for political parties to put their differences aside, and put the interests of South Africa and its people first.
