Lumka Yengeni: COSATU’s silence is deafening

13 June 2016

A full week after the story first broke and COSATU is still silent on ANC MP, Lumka Yengeni's abuse of workers' rights. This is shameful.

If the largest labour union in the country really cared they would have expressed their anger immediately when this abuse was revealed.

Indeed, COSATU needs to provide clarity on whether they place the concerns of workers above the Tripartite Alliance by condemning the actions of ANC MP, Lumka Yengeni.

Many South Africans who face this abuse cannot afford legal counsel and are left to suffer unfair treatment. This is not an isolated incident but a real problem faced in South Africa.

The fact that the ANC has come out in support of Ms Yengeni is equally condemnable. This demonstrates again just how much the ANC has changed. They are more interested in protecting those closest to Jacob Zuma than defending the rights of working South Africans.

The DA is committed to defending South Africans' rights enshrined in the Constitution. We want to bring real change to the lives of people across the country.

If COSATU really cared they would do the same and break their silence on Lumka Yengeni's abuse immediately.
