Second suspect arrested in court building as Manana expected to plead guilty

13 September 2017

Johannesburg - A second suspect in the assault case against former deputy higher education minister Mduduzi Manana was arrested in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning, as Manana was expected to plead guilty.

Before proceedings started, one of the victims pointed out a person in the court building who was allegedly involved in the assault. He was then arrested.

Warrant Officer Clifford Minnaar said the man was taken to the Randburg police station.

Manana admitted to the assault of two women at the Cubana nightclub in Fourways, Johannesburg in August.

He was previously released on R5 000 bail.

In a cellphone recording of Manana talking to one of the victims' brothers shortly after the assault, the former deputy minister said he slapped one of the women because she called him gay.

He claimed he had been "extremely provoked".
