Two arrested for KZN farm murder

Greytown – Two young men have been arrested for the murder of a 49-year-old man on a farm in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Sunday.

The two arrested were teenagers, both aged 18, said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, adding that investigations were underway to check if they could be connected to other crimes in the area.

“Goods such as a laptop, cellphone and other belongings taken during the murder and house robbery were also recovered [at the time of arrest]," he said.

The community of Seven Oaks, outside Greytown, was rocked earlier this week when Sarel David Theron – a safety facilitator at Mondi Midlands – was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds as well as apparent strangulation marks around his neck.

Perimeter fence

His colleagues became concerned when he did not report for work on Monday. They later found his body at his home on Mistly Farm.

It is believed that the attack took place last Sunday evening after the men cut through the perimeter fence.

“The timeline of events are unclear, however it appears that after Theron was stabbed, he managed to escape his attackers, locking himself in the house where he bandaged up his leg,” said Buffalo Security head, Roger Scheffer, earlier this week.

Scheffer said it was believed that the men then broke down the door and went into the house where they allegedly strangled Theron before ransacking the house completely.

Stolen goods

“It appears that the men used a chain tied to Theron’s bakkie to try and pull his bedroom safe off the wall, but it snapped.”

Following the arrests this weekend, KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Bhekinkosi Langa, said he appealed to the community not to buy stolen goods.

“Those who will be found in possession of stolen goods will be prosecuted,” he said.

The two arrested will appear in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of murder and house robbery.
