ANC Limpopo briefs CONTRALESA on cabinet intervention

Information to be filtered down to rest of traditional leadership in province

OUTCOME OF CONTRALESA AND ANC LIMPOPO LEADERSHIP MEETING

The Polokwane CONTRALESA/ANC bilateral meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 21 February 2012 wherein progress on issues of traditional leaders was discussed - proceeded as planned and was a success.

There was a full and representative complement of the CONTRALESA leadership representing all five regions of Limpopo.

CONTRALESA officially congratulated the newly elected ANC Provincial leadership.

Amongst the variety of issues tabled, the ANC leadership also clarified and gave a run-down of the developments that led to the application of Section 100 (1) (b) of the South African constitution by the National Treasury and its National Task Team members.

A collective resolution was made that Traditional leaders and the ANC leadership resolved would filter down the information about the National Treasury intervention to the rest of the traditional leadership of the province following these bilateral discussions.

Traditional leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support to the provincial government as well as the ANC leadership; re-affirming their satisfaction with ANC led government programmes and the levels of service delivery in the province.

Other important highlights of the meeting:

Traditional leaders commended the ANC led in Limpopo government for the successful completion of the Mmankele bridge in Tubatse, Sekhukhune Highlighting the significance and relief felt by various communities who needed the construction of a bridge in the area to connect them to many other amenities and services.

They equally lauded the former MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Cde Soviet Lekganyane, highlighting the good relations they had with his leadership. Traditional leaders, in turn pleaded with the ANC to find an equally suitable replacement for Cde. Lekganyane now that he had been elected into the full-time post of ANC Limpopo Provincial Secretary.

Agreements were reached on traditional leadership remuneration, transportation allowances, medical cover and other benefits; though some technical aspects related to the transportation allowances and a policy regulating this allowance still needed tightening up.

Traditional leadership expressed their satisfaction with planned infrastructural developments, office space issues and the regularisation or standardisation of salaries due to them.

A resolution was taken, however, to accelerate the pace of infrastructure provision for rural communities.

The meeting concluded with CONTRALESA committing to immediately actively engaging other sectors of Limpopo communities to see how best they could offer support to government programmes to ensure speedy and unhindered delivery by both Provincial and Local government structures across the board.

In the pipeline are more bilateral meetings with other mass democratic movement organisations. The Congress of South African Trade Unions meeting has since been moved to an unconfirmed date, the South African Communist Party and South Africa Municipal Workers Union are some of the pending meetings to follow.

In the previous media statement we erroneously indicated that the COSATU and CONTRALESA meetings would take place in March. We apologise for this mistake. It should have stated February 2012.
