ANC retains five wards, loses one - IEC

Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 18 October 2017

In yesterday’s municipal ward by-elections that took place in Mpumalanga, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and in the North West the African National Congress (ANC) retained five of the wards it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections and lost one ward to an independent candidate.

The results and new ward councillors are as follows:

In Mpumalanga:

Thokokazi Alfred Mazibuko, the independent candidate in Ward 1 in Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme – MP304. The candidate won the seat with 50.12% of the 2 188 votes cast. Voter turnout yesterday was 51.82%. 

In the Free State:

Mamoorosi Margaret Mohulatsi in Ward 12 of Mangaung Municipality – MAN.  The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 69.04% of the votes cast compared to 85.49% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 41.71%.

In KwaZulu-Natal

David Mandlenkosi Mqadi in Ward 10 of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality - KZN216.  The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 75.41% of the votes cast compared to 89.03% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 52.49%.

Lawrence Sibusiso Vanda in Ward 28 of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN216. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 91.41% of the votes cast compared to 96.77% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 45.94%.

Sicelo Thamsanqa Freedom Ngubo in Ward 2 of Richmond Municipality – KZN227. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections with an increased margin of 95.99% of the votes cast compared to 85.41% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 42.13%.

In the North West:

Jesaya Lebogang Bome in Ward 1 in Tswaing Municipality – NW382. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections with an increased margin of 73.50% of the votes cast compared to 71.23% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 51.16%.
