DA calls for law and order in eThekwini

1 March 2024

The Democratic Alliance is calling on both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and eThekwini Metro Police to regain law and order in the city, following the rampant lawlessness and destruction being inflicted on the city and communities by members of the ANC-aligned South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU).

It is unthinkable that such disregard for the law can be on full display by SAMWU while the SAPS and Metro Police fail to bring the situation under control.

However, this is not happening in a vacuum. The ANC-run eThekwini Municipality leadership and ANC-run KwaZulu-Natal Provincial government have remained entirely silent during this strike which is seeing rubbish pile up across the city, electrical faults remaining unresolved and water bursts untreated.

EThekwini is already in crisis because of the ANC and now their aligned unions are only making the situation worse for ordinary citizens who just want to go to work and take their children to school.

The DA calls on both the Premier and Mayor to urgently address the chaos unfolding across eThekwini as well for the SAPS and Metro Police to decisively deal with acts of lawlessness, damage to infrastructure and violence and intimidation being perpetuated by SAMWU.

There remains only one solution to the problems in eThekwini Municipality and that is for a DA Provincial Government to place the municipality under administration on day 1 after the elections. This remains our promise to the people of this city as only the DA can rescue eThekwini from the ANC.
