Devolution now: Metrorail Services Suspended

5 March 2024

Amidst President Cyril Ramaphosa's promises of bullet trains, the stark reality facing our nation is the suspension of some Western Cape Metrorail train services due to equipment failure within the signalling infrastructure. We urgently call upon President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Transport to heed the Director General's advice and devolve passenger rail services immediately.

The beleaguered network has once again confirmed the suspension of train services at Bellville/ Eerste River which impacts Kraaifontein, Lavistown, Eerste River, Strand, and Monte Vista train service due to multiple signalling issues and equipment failures, leaving Western Cape commuters stranded and reliant on costly alternative transportation options.

In light of this dire situation, it is imperative to address the pressing need for reliable and affordable transport options, especially as the cost of living continues to spiral out of control, exacerbated by the incompetence of the National Government.

Derrick America said: “The residents of the Western Cape should be outraged. The National ANC Government has once again failed miserably, leading to the complete dismantling of our rail infrastructure.

To improve the lives of residents in the Western Cape and to ensure cheaper transportation options, immediate devolution of passenger rail services to capable sub-national Governments like the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town is needed".
