FF+ formally requests SARS lifestyle audit of Malema

Anton Alberts writes to Oupa Magashula asking for an investigation

FF PLUS DIRECTS A FORMAL REQUEST TO SARS TO INVESTIGATE MALEMA'S TAX PAYMENTS

The FF Plus yesterday (22 February 2010) formally requested the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to investigate, as a matter of urgency, the income and true tax contribution in the past year of Mr. Julius Malema.

Malema has to date not provided any proper answer with regards to his income and lifestyle. The Sunday newspapers furthermore reported that Malema's companies had received government tenders to the value of more than R100 million. Despite this, Malema as per usual, sidestepped any questions and attributed this attention given to his financial position to the actions of his political opponents.

The fact however remains that this attention and questions directed to Malema are of cardinal importance due to the following considerations:

1. Malema is a public figure who makes controversial statements with regard to the way in which the lot of poor people could be improved and his personal life should in the same way show high moral standards and insight into the lot of poor people.

2. Malema wants to use communist instruments to see to his voter's interests, but he himself lives like a real capitalist.

3. All residents in the country, including Malema, are equal before the law and therefore have equal obligations to contribute to the revenue.

The FF Plus hopes to hear from SARS speedily in this regard.

Sir,

MR. JULIUS MALEMA'S INCOME AND LIFESTYLE

We refer to the above and wish to state as follows:

1. Various newspapers (ex. The Star of 19/02/2010) last week reported that Mr. Malema has a monthly income of R20 000, but that his lifestyle in spite of this average income, own two properties with a joint value of nearly R5 million as well as a number of expensive vehicles. He is furthermore a director of four companies which had won several government tenders.

2. If all the information should prove to be true, it would be logical to deduct that Mr. Malema's maintains a lifestyle which is far above his income. In the light of the Minister of Finance's budget speech in which he stated that all South Africans have to fulfil their tax obligations and the fact that Mr. Malema is seen to be a national figure and leader, it would be in the public's interest to investigate his financial status and more specifically:

2.1 What is Mr. Malema's true income in contrast to his declared income with the South African Revenue Service;

2.2 What the extent is of Mr. Malema's real assets and lifestyle and how he is able to finance it.

3. The FF Plus therefore hereby requests that a lifestyle audit be undertaken by the South African Revenue Service into Mr. Malema's position as a matter of urgency.

Respectfully,

Adv. A Alberts
