FF Plus will keep fighting against Expropriation Bill – Pieter Groenewald

Party leader says ConCourt must determine whether the proposed law is constitutional or not before president can sign it

FF Plus will keep fighting against Expropriation Bill

7 September 2022

The FF Plus condemns the Expropriation Bill, which will make it possible to expropriate, among other things, land without any compensation, and will vote against it at every opportunity.

All the Bill's clauses were adopted with an ANC majority in the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure this morning.

This is an attempt by the ANC to use the Expropriation Bill to carry out expropriation without compensation.

This is despite the fact that the ruling party failed to gain the required two-thirds support in the National Assembly (NA) last year to amend Section 25 of the Constitution to allow for expropriation without compensation.

The FF Plus has already made it clear that it strongly opposes these amendments, and the party is even willing to approach the Constitutional Court in a bid to stop the Bill.

The FF Plus will engage with all the parties opposed to the Bill seeing as there is a technical provision in terms of which a bill must first be referred to the Constitutional Court if a third of Members of Parliament request it.

Then the Constitutional Court must determine whether the proposed law is constitutional or not before the president can sign it.

The FF Plus will do everything in its power to prevent the Bill from being passed into law. Expropriation without compensation is unconstitutional, and must not be allowed in South Africa.

Landownership and the protection of that right is one of the pillars of a democracy, particularly a constitutional democracy.
