Hawks to investigate World Cup bribe claims - Anton Alberts

FF Plus MP says this will apparently be done in conjunction with the US authorities and the FBI

SA Police Service will work with FBI to investigate soccer fraud

3 June 2015

The FF Plus today received confirmation that the Hawks will be investigating the involvement of South Africans in the Fifa fraud, Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Sport said.

The reference number for the case is ACTTIR 2015/06/06.

Adv. Alberts says the FF Plus, who had reported the case requested that the comments of Danny Jordaan, the ANC’s mayor in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and president of the SA Soccer Federation (SAFA), that an amount of $10 million had been paid to Concacaf for ‘soccer development’, should in be investigated in particular.

He said that the Hawks had confirmed that the investigation will be done in conjunction with the American authorities and the FBI which had already launched an investigation.

“South Africa’s minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, should take note of the Hawks investigation, as well as the fact that South African politicians who could be involved in the fraud, will now form part of the official investigation.

“His attempts to create the impression that nothing untoward had been done by South Africans, is therefore inappropriate and is getting ahead of the investigation. He can rest assured that the high level investigation is now in place to reveal the truth,” Adv. Alberts said.
