NO WATER AT HELEN JOSEPH HOSPITAL

I am appalled that Helen Joseph hospital in west Johannesburg ran out of water yesterday (Monday 14 October).

It is inexcusable that staff on the upper floors had to use buckets to get water from fire emergency hose pipes.

Toilets were clogged and patients could not be washed.

The problem is that emergency water tanks were not adequate after a general water cut-off in the area.

This hospital has been plagued by maintenance problems, including nine out of 13 broken lifts.

The Gauteng Health Department must intervene to ensure that this crumbling hospital is renovated and properly maintained.
