Lesufi should support inquiry into sexual abuse at GP schools – Khume Ramulifho

DA MPL says Premier and MEC must act immediately to allow process of healing to begin

DA calls on Lesufi to support inquiry into sexual abuse at GP schools

17 October 2017

I have written to Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, this morning, calling on him to act and use the powers vested in his Office, by the Constitution, to take charge and lead the way in appointing a commission of inquiry into sexual abuse in schools in the province.

Only the Premier may appoint such a commission in terms of section 127(2)(e) of the Constitution.

I have also written to Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi to support this request by the DA and call for Premier Makhura to make this appointment urgently.

Sexual abuse cases in our schools must be taken seriously by the ANC administration in the province. The Premier and the MEC need to respond in a very deliberate and serious manner to this crisis that has shaken the education sector in Gauteng.

Our children are the future of this country and we must protect their human rights and dignity. Learners and parents should be reassured that the provincial government is taking strong action.

Premier Makhura and MEC Lesufi must act now to allow the process of healing to begin and to ensure that our children are not further robbed of their youth.
