Myeni appointment to SAA Board a disaster for job creation – Alf Lees

DA says they are considering what legal action to take, adds that Myeni wrecked airline and decision to retain her is a disaster

Myeni appointment to SAA Board a disaster for job creation

2 September 2016

The Cabinet decision to retain Dudu Myeni not only as a member of the SAA Board, but also as the Chair of the Board, is a disaster for South Africa.

Myeni has played brinkmanship with Minister Gordhan and has won the day despite her record of wrecking SAA. Under Myeni’s watch SAA has:

- Failed to publish annual financial statements for 2014/15 with an apparent loss of R 4.7 billion.

- Failed to publish annual financial statements for 2015/16 with an apparent loss of R 4 billion.

- Apparently run SAA at a R 1.3 billion loss for the first quarter of 2016/17.

- Irrationally suspended officials, apparently because they tried to curb corruption.

- Cost the company millions of rands with no returns for the BnP funding debacle.

- Put SAA at risk of losing lucrative routes such as the Hong Kong route.

The DA believes that Ms Myeni’s record at SAA is so poor that we are urgently considering which legal action would be appropriate.
