Premier Makhura congratulates Makhaya on appointment as President’s economic advisor

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has congratulated economist Trudi Makhaya for her appointment as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s economic adviser. 

Makhaya is the CEO of Makhaya Advisory, and a former deputy commissioner at the Competition Commission of SA.

Prior to her appointment, Makhaya was a member of the Premier’s Economic Advisory Panel which oversees all economic and infrastructure plans in the province.

The panel advises the premier and the Gauteng provincial government on implementing strategies to realise objectives of increasing employment, empowerment, exports and inclusive growth in line with the vision set out in the National Development Plan and the provincial economic plan. 

“I would like to wish Makhaya well in her new position and to convey our appreciation for the valuable contribution that she has made in her capacity as the member of the Premier’sEconomic Advisory Panel.

“Given her vast experience and such a remarkable track record, we are confident that the South African economy is in good hands,” Makhura said.

Makhaya holds an MBA and an MSc in Development Economics from Oxford University, where she studied as a Rhodes scholar. From the University of Witwatersrand, she holds an MCom in Economics, an Honour’s Degree in Economics and a BCom in Law and Economics.

As the president’s advisor, some of Makhaya’s duties will include coordinating the work of the recently appointed investment envoys as they crisscross the globe trying to attract at least new foreign direct investment to the economy over the next five years.
