SA troops engage M23 rebels in DRC - SANDU

Union says soldiers eliminated an enemy machine gun nest hampering advance of Congolese forces

Media statement by the South African National Defence Union on operational contact by South troops with M23 rebel enemy forces in the DRC.

SANDU understands that South African Troops deployed in the intervention brigade in the eastern DRC have been engaged on at least two incidents of engagement with enemy rebel forces near Goma over the past 12 hours.

Apparently our troops eliminated an enemy machine gun nest hampering the advance of Congolese forces and also returned mortar fire on rebel forces.

SANDU wishes our troops in the DRC all the best and we call on all South Africans to support our men and women in uniform facing the inevitable dangers of military conflict irrespective of political opinion. Our soldiers need to know that we back them. We wish for their safe return after successful completion if their tour of duty.

Statement issued by Pikkie Greeff, SANDU: National Secretary, August 24 2013
