SAA: Call for urgent meeting with govt – COSATU

Federation wants to discuss cancellation of Takatso deal to find a way forward to secure future of airline and its employees

COSATU notes government’s announcement on SAA

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) notes government’s announcement on the cancellation of the Takatso deal with South African Airways (SAA).  The Federation will seek an urgent meeting with government to engage on these developments and more importantly on a way forward that secures the future of SAA and its employees.

We have been heartened by government efforts to revive SAA which had collapsed in 2020 and the recent progress we have seen with the airline once again flying, reopening domestic and international routes and employing staff.

Whilst we cannot return to the era of endless bailouts which saw the state pump R50 billion into SAA, we remain convinced that it can be placed on a sustainable path and once again make a positive contribution to the domestic and continent’s tourism, travel and aviation industries.

The aviation industry is a notoriously difficult one globally where many well-resourced airlines have collapsed.  The rebuilding and growth of SAA will require agile leadership and sound management.  If provided these and protected from the corruption and mismanagement that grounded what was once Africa’s best airline,  SAA can once again thrive.
