Court orders Mookgophong Local Municipality to supply water to its community - AfriForum

Organisation says the taps of the town have been dry for over 900 hours this year

Court compels Mookgophong Municipality to supply water to residents

AfriForum was granted a court order by the North Gauteng High Court, compelling the Mookgophong Local Municipality to supply water to its community.

This comes after water supply in the town came to a standstill. The taps of the town have been dry for over 900 hours this year.

"The court order is a vast victory for the town and serves as mechanism to hold the Municipality accountable. It's our priority that residents are supplied with water. The court order further stipulates that the community should be informed when the maintenance of pipes are planned or when the water to the town will be cut. It gives residents time to put plans in place," Philip van Staden, Chairman of the Naboomspruit branch of AfriForum said.

"The order also made it clear that immediate intervention is needed. AfriForum, as a civil rights organisation, will keep a watchful eye to ensure that the constitutional rights of South Africans prevail," Morné Mostert, Provincial Coordinator forAfriForum in Limpopo said.

If the court order is not executed by the parties, they will be guilty of contempt of court.
