Results of the Municipal by-elections

The Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Centurion today that the African National Congress had won 14 of the 17 municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 7 September 2011. Of the remaining seats two went to the Democratic Alliance and one to the Congress of the People. 

Voter turnout varied between 16.59% and 68.92% with an average of 34.24%.

Two by-elections took place in Gauteng. The new councillors are:

  • Johannes Frederick Jooste of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 21 in Merafong City [Carletonville] Municipality - GT484.

This ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.

  • Peter Sutton of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 78 in Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality - TSH.

In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) one by-election took place. Sbonelo Nhlakanipho Tembe of the African National Congress is the new councillor in Ward 17 in Umhlabuyalingana (Emangusi) Municipality - KZN271.

Nine by-elections took place in Limpopo of which one was uncontested. The new councillors are:

  • Soza Solly Maswanganyi of the African National Congress in Ward 7 in the Greater Giyani (Giyani) Municipality - LIM331
  • Beatrice Maria Khosa of the African National Congress in Ward 28 in the Greater Giyani (Giyani) Municipality - LIM331
  • Giyani Jonathan Mkansi of the African National Congress in Ward 1 in the Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof) Municipality - LIM332
  • Refilwe Eddyson Sekhonoane of the African National Congress in Ward 18 in the Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof) Municipality - LIM332
  • Ngwako Selowa of the African National Congress in Ward 24 in the Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof) Municipality - LIM332
  • Dimakatso Thomas Maake of the African National Congress in Ward 33 in the Greater Tzaneen (Tzaneen) Municipality - LIM333
  • Baselekile Ryphie Mashale of the African National Congress in Ward 10 in Ba-Phalaborwa (Phalaborwa) Municipality - LIM334. This ward was uncontested.
  • Chipane Frank Makweng of the Congress of the People in Ward 10 in Makhuduthamaga (Ngwaritsi) Municipality - LIM473.

This ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.

  • Ngwakwane Dorah Mphethi of the African National Congress in Ward 17 in the Greater Tubatse (Burgersfort/Ohrigstad/Eastern Tubatse) Municipality - LIM475.

Three by-elections took place in Thembisile (KwaMhlanga) Municipality - MP315, Mpumalanga. The new councillors all represent the African National Congress:

  • Aaron Bhinga Khumalo in Ward 13
  • Daisy Mamanyana Msibi in Ward 17
  • Sarah Malebo Hlungwani in Ward 32.

Two by-elections took place in the Western Cape. Both new councillors represent the African National Congress. They are:

  • William Abels in Ward 6 in Cederberg (Citrusdal) Municipality - WC012.

This ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.

  • Latitia Deyce in Ward 1 in Beaufort West [Beaufort West] Municipality - WC053.
