Results of the Municipal by-elections

The Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Centurion today that the African National Congress had won 14 of the 17 municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 7 September 2011. Of the remaining seats two went to the Democratic Alliance and one to the Congress of the People.
Voter turnout varied between 16.59% and 68.92% with an average of 34.24%.
Two by-elections took place in Gauteng. The new councillors are:
- Johannes Frederick Jooste of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 21 in Merafong City [Carletonville] Municipality - GT484.
This ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.
- Peter Sutton of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 78 in Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality - TSH.
In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) one by-election took place. Sbonelo Nhlakanipho Tembe of the African National Congress is the new councillor in Ward 17 in Umhlabuyalingana (Emangusi) Municipality - KZN271.
Nine by-elections took place in Limpopo of which one was uncontested. The new councillors are:
