REPLY:

The Cabinet Office has on average over the last five years spent between R225 000 and R250 000 on catering for the duration of Makgotla. As the Makgotla always takes place at the Presidential Guest House on the Brynterion Estate, there were no accommodation and travel costs, except for Premiers and Provincial DGs which are born by the respective Provinces. The Cabinet Office has never expended any costs on entertainment at the Lekgotla.

Important to note is that only the last Lekgotla (Jan 2011) was held at an outside venue. The decision to move to an outside venue was to ensure that there would be no interruptions during the Lekgotla. The costs related to the afore-mentioned Lekgotla was R 2 324 659, 42 million which included all costs (see Mail & Guardian report). The only costs that were not included were the travel costs for all the participants that were paid by the respective departments/provinces.
