Results of the May 18 2011 local government elections in eThekwini (Durban):
In eThekwini (Durban) the African National Congress won 603,929 PR Votes and 582,224 Ward Votes -1,186,153 votes combined and 61,07% of the total. It won 78 out of 102 ward seats and 126 out of 204 seats in total.
The Democratic Alliance secured 408,179 votes (Ward + PR), 21,02% of the total. Its candidates won 17 ward seats, giving the party 43 seats in total. The Minority Front won 103,043 votes (Ward + PR), 6 ward seats and 11 seats in total.
The Inkatha Freedom Party was beaten into fifth place by the National Freedom Party which won 91,294 votes (Ward + PR) and 10 seats. The IFP secured only 80,170 votes (Ward + PR), 4,13% of the total. It won 9 seats including one ward seat.
59,30% of registered voters in the municipality cast ballots.
The ANC received 493,083 more votes (Ward + PR) in 2011 in eThekwini than it had done in 2006, a 71,1% jump. It increased its share of the vote by 3,5 percentage points from 57,6% to 61,1,%. The IFP secured 53,426 fewer votes, a drop of 39,9%. Its share of the vote dropped 7 percentage points.
The DA secured 207,781 more votes in 2011 than it had done in 2006 - a 103,7% increase. However, because of the jump in absolute ANC support it was only able to raise its share of the vote by 4,4 percentage points to 21,02%.
