406 VACANT POSTS AT JOBURG HOSPITAL

There are 406 vacant medical staff posts at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. This is revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo in a written reply to my questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

The hospital is short of 277 nurses, 244 of which are Professional Nurse Specialty posts. Of the 153 vacant doctor posts, 107 are medical specialist positions.

There are also 76 vacancies in the allied professions, including 15 Grade One Pharmacists and 8 Radiographers. The high vacancy rate is because of an ill-advised staff moratorium earlier this year that has crippled services at this major hospital.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane intervened at the hospital only after the media exposed conditions there. The Department is now filling 140 of the vacant positions, but this still leaves critical gaps, especially in specialist positions.

It is essential that all posts are filled swiftly so that a quality service can be provided at this hospital.
