Acting PIKITUP MD relieved of his duties - SAMWU

Union says Lawrence Boya won't be missed by its members

PIKITUP Managing Director released of his duties

SAMWU in the Greater Johannesburg Region has reliably learnt that Mr Boya has been released off his duties as the acting Managing Director (MD) of PIKITUP SOC (Pty) Ltd. This brave decision by the City of Johannesburg is welcomed by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU). Municipalities must deploy and employ people with a good track record and integrity (see PIKITUP statement on Amanda Nair's appointment as new MD).

We understand that a new MD has already been appointed. The decision not to appoint Mr Boya does not come as a surprise, given his track record in the Eastern Cape Provincial Government and his recent arrest, relating to alleged corruption and fraud, as reported widely in the media.

Members of SAMWU at PIKITUP will not miss Boya's absence, due mainly to his controversial style of leading the entity. SAMWU is in the process of taking PIKITUP back to the CCMA over an agreement signed to abolish labour brokers and improve working conditions. Mr Boya refused to comply with this agreement. However, it is primarily on the basis that Boya increased salaries of individuals outside and contrary to the Collective Bargaining structures at PIKITUP, that we are welcoming the axing of Mr Boya.

We will continue to engage the leadership of the African National Congress in the Johannesburg region under the leadership of Comrade Parks Tau, to help foster better relations in Municipal Owned entities and the City of Johannesburg.
