ANC names members of ad-hoc committee on Pikoli

Statement issued by the party's parliamentary caucus January 13 2009

Ad-hoc Committee on Pikoli

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus wishes to commend Parliament for its decision to constitute a multiparty joint ad-hoc committee that will deliberate on the recommendation of the President on the National Director of Public Prosecutions. The committee will upon conclusion of its business, advice Parliament's two Houses whether to reject or accept the President's recommendation.

The decision to set up a special committee to reflect on the matter is important as it affords all parties in Parliament an opportunity to conduct a thorough assessment of the facts presented before it before making any pronouncement on the matter. This process affirms the seriousness in which the institution regards its obligations in relation to this task.

In ensuring that the ANC plays a valuable role in the work of the joint ad-hoc committee, Caucus has forwarded to the presiding officers an able team of its Members of Parliament, selected from the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. The names of the MPs are:

  1. Oupa Monareng
  2. Yunus Carrim
  3. Butana Komphela
  4. J Moloi
  5. Jomo Nyambi
  6. Ntombikayise Sibhidla
  7. Cecil Burgess
  8. Jerome-Joseph Maake
  9. Kgoshi Mokoena
  10. Johannes Tau
  11. Beauty Dlulane
  12. Faith Mazibuko
  13. Christopher Ntuli
  14. Letlhogile Moseki

Caucus wishes these committee members as well as those from other parties well in their task.

Appeals Court Decision on ANC President

The ANC Caucus has noted the decision by the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein yesterday against last year's ruling by the Pietermaritzburg High Court. Caucus respects the ruling.

We wish to stress and affirm the ANC's position that the judgement has nothing to do with the guilt or otherwise of the ANC President, and further makes no pronouncements on the merits of the charges previously brought against him by the NPA.

The ANC President remains innocent of any charge.
