ANC update on NWest and ECape election lists

Ruling party says it will contest any effort to take it to court on matter

ANC STATEMENT ON NORTH WEST AND EASTERN CAPE LIST PROCESSES

The African National Congress (ANC) is satisfied with its lists processes that were conducted all over the country and culminated in the approval by the extended National Executive Committee (NEC) this past weekend. We also want to state that all appeals processes have since been closed.

The NEC nonetheless, directed two provinces namely: the Eastern Cape and North West to finalise some of their list processes as a result of objections and straying away from our national guidelines.

NORTH WEST PROVINCE

The branches and regions that have been asked to finalise their list processes as a result of our internal objections and not adhering to the national guidelines, are the following:

In the Kenneth Kaunda region:

Eight wards in Tlokwe, two wards in Makwasi Hills and one ward in Matlosana ward 2.

In the Bophirima region:

One ward in Lekwataemane ward 7 and Mabusa ward 7.

In the Bojanala region:

Six wards in the Getleng area and two wards in Rustenburg.

In the Ngakamodiri Moleme region:

Six wards in Ditshobotla.

Three wards in Ratlou, three wards in Ramotshiri Moiloa and two wards in Tswaing.

The rest of the province is in good standing and all candidates have been cleared by the National List Committee and the extended NEC.

EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE

The extended NEC approved all lists from the province's five regions out of the six. The Provincial List Committee of the Eastern Cape has been directed by the national leadership to finalise all lists, local and district, within the agreed national guidelines.

We are confident that the provincial leadership working together with the regional and national leadership will be able to finalise its lists of OR Tambo.

We also want to state categorically that the ANC will contest any attempts to subvert its internal democracy. In this regard, we will be contesting in a court of law those who have taken us to court and made unfounded statements to the effect that our list conferences in the Buffalo City and Alfred Nzo region were illegitimate.

We believe that the applicants in the two regions of the Eastern Cape are not driven by any desire to strengthen the internal democracy within the ANC. They are, instead, driven by personal and other reasons that fall outside of the workings of the ANC. The headquarters of the ANC, working together with our province of the Eastern Cape as well as the two regions and our branches there, have already instructed our legal team to respond to these cases of litigation from the five people concerned.

Any attempts of not having the ANC submitting candidates for these two regions to the IEC will not succeed. We are confident that even our courts will find in our favour and dismiss all those who not only want to divert ANC internal democratic practices, but also want to create a diversion in the further democratisation of our country.

As guided by our Constitution, the ANC will, after the completion of these court cases, also institute disciplinary hearings against any of its members who have opted to bring the ANC into disrepute by ignoring all internal processes.
