The African National Congress welcomes the signing of an agreement between ZANU-PF and the Movement for Democratic Change in Zimbabwe yesterday (21 July 2008).
The agreement is one of the most promising developments towards the resolution of the situation in Zimbabwe in the recent past. The ANC urges both parties to build on the foundation established by this agreement, and to earnestly pursue a political arrangement that puts the needs and wishes of the Zimbabwean people first.
The ANC congratulates President Thabo Mbeki for the role he has played in facilitating this agreement. The ANC commends President Mbeki for his efforts, on behalf of SADC, to mediate in an even-handed and constructive manner.
The ANC reaffirms its support for an inclusive negotiated settlement that allows the leaders and people of Zimbabwe to work together to address the severe social and economic challenges facing the country.
