CWU a step closer to unionising The New Age

Company grants union rights to access workplace

CWU has achieved a significant milestone at The New Age Media

Following a protracted and intense engagement with The New Age Media (TNA Media) workers from around July/August 2011, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) can now reveal that an important milestone in terms of "unionizing" the workers has been achieved.

In this regard TNA has accorded CWU the rights to access to workplace (in order to have meetings with its members and further to recruit more members,) as well as the right to have workers paying their levies/subscriptions to the union. This is an important milestone as it paves the way towards CWU becoming a Collective Bargaining Agent for this important layer of the working people whose duty is to inform, educate and entertain the South African society about the developments not only in the country but the world over.

CWU is further calling upon those TNA workers who have not yet signed CWU membership stop order forms to do so to enable the union to be in a better position to negotiate their wages and the conditions of service with their employer.

These workers have taken a conscious decision to swell the ranks of other media workers in both the print and broadcast as well as the ICT workers in general who are organized under the banner of the mighty CWU. We further call upon all media workers who are either disorganized or unorganized to sooner than later join this bigger family organized under the biggest and progressive workers federation - COSATU.

Statement issued by Matankana Mothapo, National Spokesperson, CWU, December 8 2011
