DA wins ward off ANC in Inkwanca municipality, ECape - Helen Zille

Party also showed growth of up to 4.2 percentage points in the other 3 wards in this municipality

DA wins EC ward off ANC, retains all wards so far

27 November 2014

The Democratic Alliance has staged a significant surge in growth to win a rural Eastern Cape ward off the ANC, going from 33% in 2014 to 52% yesterday.

The ward in Inkwanca municipality, dissolved as a result of poor governance, comprises the towns of Molteno and Sterkstroom.

The DA also showed growth of up to 4.2 percentage points in the other 3 wards in this municipality.

In the Western Cape, residents of Grabouw came out in numbers to endorse good governance in Theewaterskloof by giving the DA a 55% majority, the strongest in 3 years, despite the violence and intimidation that defined the ANC's campaign.

Ward 2 in Overstrand municipality was also retained with a comfortable 75% majority.

Promising growth was shown in 2 wards in KZN's Mooi Mpofana municipality, an ANC stronghold.

The DA grew from 14% in 2014 to 21.5% yesterday in ward 1. In ward 2 the growth was even more apparent, with the DA going from 20.7% in 2014 to 33% in these by-elections.

Results from wards in the dissolved municipalities of the North West, mostly ANC strongholds, were still outstanding this morning. The DA is hoping for similar growth trends in this province.

Round after round of by-elections continue to confirm one thing: momentum is growing behind the DA as we head towards local elections.

The scene is truly set for the battle for major towns and cities in 2016.
