COSATU condemns Mayor De Lille's grandstanding on Lwandle residents
COSATU condemns the Mayor politicising of the misery of people evicted by SANRAL. To set all kinds on conditions in the face of an urgent desperate need is reflective of how this City systematically undermines the plight of the poor.
We should have people resettled as a matter of urgency on land that is available. The technical details can be sorted out later. The City must provide basic services and ensure that the necessary regulations are put in place.
Last week the City said that they will only house those evicted, for a month, in the community halls and then they will have to move. To now accuse the Minister and SANRAL of being the stumbling block, when in fact it is the City and the Mayor, is disingenuous.
COSATU calls on the Mayor to stop negotiating through the media and grandstand on people's difficulties. The constitution enjoins different levels of Government to cooperate in the delivery of the basic needs of our people and COSATU calls on the Mayor to honour these obligations.
