Hlaudi Motsoaneng's removal illegal - CWU

Union says some SABC board members used by their handlers to stage a coup d'état against COO

CWU ON REMOVAL OF ACTING CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER

06 March 2013

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is disappointed by the illegal removal of acting Chief Operations Officer (COO), Mr Hlaudi Motsoaneng by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board.

We believe that the small clique or faction that operates within the Board has never stopped working to topple Mr Motsoeneng ever since he started his work as the acting COO. They have done so through concerted and well coordinated media leaks, rumour mongering and spreading lies. This has at times harbored on sabotage on the person of Mr Motsoeneng in particular, and the Corporation in general. And we know that the SABC board is divided on this matter.

We demand the full explanation from the SABC board of why the acting COO who managed to stabilize our Public Broadcaster was removed without explanation. Our members and workers in general at the SABC are tired of the board that is always making changes without consulting them through their labour representative. We also demand the SABC board to explain to our members within 48hours about their factional decisions, failure to that we are intending to mobilize workers to down tools.

CWU is aware that some of the SABC board members were used by their handlers inside and outside to remove or coup d'état the acting COO. Some among SABC board members and their cronies were denied tenders by the office of the acting COO hence the news of his removal was announced. We are aware that they were meetings or caucuses by some of board members with outside people to topple Mr Motsoaneng and some of them they failed the SABC to extend were the public broadcaster collapsed under their watch.

As CWU, we are going to write a letter to the Minister of Communications, Ms Dina Pule demanding the explanations of all this changes at the SABC. We also request the Minister to reverse the SABC board decision before anarchy can prevail.
