Dr Ramphele Backs Electoral Reform Moves
Two weeks after Dr Mamphela Ramphele announced that Agang would make electoral reform the first business of Parliament after the 2014 elections, the Democratic Alliance has tabled a bill also calling for electoral reform.
In a statement released on Monday, Dr Ramphele said:
"Announcing the Agang initiative two weeks ago, I made electoral reform Agang's top priority for Parliament after the 2014 election. So I welcome the DA's action in placing the issue on Parliament's agenda. Agang is still developing the detail of our policy, but the fundamental principle underlying it will be that citizens must have the right to choose who represents them in Parliament, to hold them accountable and to replace them if they don't perform. Citizens must feel that their votes count. One of the reasons for the violence of the protests that have swept the country in recent months is that they feel voiceless and powerless."
