NUMSA welcomes Rustenburg Magistrate Court decision to deny bail to the alleged assassins of the late NUMSA Shopsteward and ANC PR Councillor Moss Phakoe
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) in Hlanganani Region (North-West) welcomes the Rustenburg Magistrate Court decision to deny bail to former Rustenburg Mayor, Mathews Wolmarans and other two accused on the alleged assassination or murder of the late NUMSA Shopsteward and ANC PR Councillor Moss Phakoe.
Cde Phakoe died in a cold-blooded assassination or murder in 2009 at the driveway of his home, after returning from an ANC elections campaign meeting, just two days after handing over sensitive documents containing allegations of corruption at the Rustenburg Local Municipality.
His assassination or murder remains a black spot on the embedded cancer of rotten corruption ravaging our municipalities across the country; and also the deep-seated usage of money to influence factional and electoral contests within our broad liberation movement in favour of certain cliques or powerful factions.
Cde Phakoe was a principled Cadre and a fighter against corruption, he remains a hero to many workers who are being victimized for exposing maladministration and corruption within our ranks and broader society. His blood will nourish a tree that's breeds a new Cadre that does not steal from the poor, but serves our people with love and zeal.
NUMSA supports Judge Maharaj's decision not to grant bail to the alleged assassins or murderers, given the poisonous political climate this case has brought in North-West and particularly the threats to the life of COSATU Provincial Secretary Cde Solly Phetoe for acting on the workers mandate to demand full justice to be served or meted out against Cde Phakoe's assassins.
As NUMSA we will continue to mobilise our members in large numbers to be part of this case until justice is served. This case is also critical in our ongoing fight against corruption wherever its manifest itself.
