Monama should've been dismissed a month ago - Jack Bloom

WEAK ACTION AGAINST GAUTENG TRANSPORT HEAD

The non-renewal of the contract of Gauteng Transport Head Benedicta Monama was the least that Premier Nomvula Mokonyane could do in the face of serious allegations of financial misconduct.

She should actually have been summarily dismissed a month ago after she reportedly defied the instructions of two MECs (Finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi) to sign a R1 billion ten year contract.

I am sceptical that further action will be taken against Monama as senior officials have typically been let off the hook when it comes to corruption allegations.

My view is that a criminal charge should be laid against Monama under Section 86 of the Public Finance Management Act, which can potentially result in five years jail for wilful and gross negligence that leads to financial misconduct.

If the provincial government does not lay such a charge, I will do so myself.
