NPA must stop dragging its feet – Mmusi Maimane

DA says it's been 13 days and Abrahams has yet to determine whether they will appeal

13 days later and only inaction from NPA on Zuma corruption charges

12 May 2016

I have today received correspondence from the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv Shaun Abrahams, confirming that they have yet to make a determination as to whether they will appeal the North Gauteng High Court’s judgment.

Tomorrow it will be a 14 days since the full bench of this court found that the decision to drop the 783 charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering was irrational. According to our own legal opinion, the charges are therefore now automatically reinstated as a result of this unanimous judgement.

While the DA respects the independence of the NPA, we cannot forget that this has been a 7 year-long battle to ensure that the important principle that every South African – no matter how powerful – is treated equally before the law.

We therefore again urge the NPA and the Presidency to stop dragging their feet and to let justice prevail.

It is now time to give President Zuma his day in court, and afford him the opportunity to defend himself, without fear or favour, on the 783 charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering which he now currently faces.
