ANC RECOMMEND NAMES TO SERVE ON AD HOC COMMITTEE
22 April 2014
The Office of the ANC Chief Whip confirms that it has recommended seven names to the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly for appointment to serve on the Ad Hoc Committee to consider the President's response to the Public Protector's Report on Nkandla security upgrades.
In terms of the Rules of the National Assembly, parties were afforded 10 working days (from the date of the establishment of the ad hoc committee) to recommend names to the Speaker for appointment to the ad hoc committee. Despite the exhaustive and complex internal process of identifying capable representatives for this Ad Hoc Comiittee, we are pleased that we were able to submit these recommended names today, 22 April 2014, two days ahead of the stipulated deadline of 24 April 2014. We have repeatedly affirmed our commitment to meet the deadline as set out in the rules of Parliament.
As we have repeatedly stressed, this Ad Hoc committee is being established during the parliamentary recess and election season, which has meant that putting together a team of seven MPs, who are currently involved in intense election campaigning in all nine provinces, was not going to be an overnight exercise. Our task was therefore unique comparable to that of other parties, who on average needed only to identify a single MP to represent them in the committee. This is the reason it took some parties only 24 Hours to forward the names for this committee.
The list we have recommended to the Speaker is composed of very capable individuals with the necessary political experience, expertise and legal know-how on the matter the Ad Hoc Committee is mandated to consider. However, these individuas have also been released from extremely important election obligations in various provinces, where they were playing key roles. We are pleased that, following long negotiations with provincial elections campaign managers, an agreement was reached to release these individuals for this important task.
