ANC loses two seats in by-elections – IEC

These went to independent and EFF candidate, ANC retains another seat, as does the DA

Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 20 April 2022

In the four by-elections that took place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape and Western Cape yesterday, 20 April 2022, an independent won a seat over the African National Congress (ANC), the ANC retained a seat, the Economic Freedom Fighters won a seat over the ANC, and the Democratic Alliance retained one seat. 

The independent candidate is:

- Martha Ntombekhaya Kortman in Ward 33 in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139. The independent won the seat over the ANC from the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 57.18% of the votes cast compared to 37.60% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 66.81%.

The new ANC councillor is:
- Jeffrey Linda Mchunu in Ward 103 in the Ethekwini Municipality – ETH
. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 43.91% of the votes cast compared to 38.01% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 32.18%.

The new EFF councillor is:
- Olebogeng Samuel Tumodi in Ward 03 in the Phokwane Municipality – NC094. The party won the seat over the ANC from the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 55.60% of the votes cast compared to 47.78% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 59.66%.

The new DA councillor is:
- Patric Daniels in Ward 02 in the Witzenberg Municipality – WC022. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 32.66% of the votes cast compared to 37.97% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 50.34%.
