OFFICIAL SADTU RESPONSE TO VIOLENT DEATH OF A LEARNER IN KWA-ZULU NATAL
The South African Democratic Teachers' Union has denounced the killing of a learner and the injuring of two others at Isizimele High School in Dannhauser, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday this week.
The safety and security of both learners and teachers was one of the resolutions adopted after the union's national general council held in Kempton Park at the weekend.
SADTU's General Secretary, Mugwena Maluleke, said "The rising number of violent incidents involving both learners and teachers is very concerning. SADTU is calling for the harshest sentences to be meted out to perpetrators and we are currently investigating the incident in more detail. Supporting South Africa's education system remains our top priority."
The union is also calling for the creation of a national registry of all violent actions against both learners and teachers and that research be conducted at schools where such incidents occur.
"The matric exams have already started in certain provinces and providing a safe and positive school environment for all pupils and teachers is a must," concluded Maluleke.
