SAHRC commissioner nominees approved - Office of ANC Chief Whip

Prof. Bongani Christopher Majola recommended for position of chairperson

APPOINTMENT OF COMMISSIONERS TO THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

15 NOVEMBER 2016

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip welcomes the National Assembly’s approval of seven candidates for appointment to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) by the President for a non-renewable term of 7 years. Parliament’s endorsement of these candidates is a culmination of a rigorous, open and transparent selection process, which also included participation of the public, by the portfolio committee on justice and correctional services

We are satisfied with the quality of the recommended list of names, which is made up of qualified, fit and proper men and women who we have no doubt will ensure SAHRC continues to discharge its functions with independence, impartiality, dignity and effectiveness. Human rights in our country were won through blood and sweat, and are anchored in our Constitution’s Bill of Rights which SAHRC is created to advance, protect and educate the public about.

The following persons have been recommended to the President for appointment as commissioners:

- Adv. Andrew Hurtley Gaum (Full time)
