The DA welcomes the suspension of an employee of the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the Mitchells Plain police station, who has been accused of allegedly luring women to the police station under the pretext of getting them jobs and then raping them.

The DA calls for an urgent investigation to determine whether the employee is guilty or not. If the allegations prove to be true, it places even more doubt on the competencies of SAPS to prevent violent crime, since it is alleged that it happened at the police station.

A police station should be a place where South Africans feel safe. Residents of Mitchells Plain should not be afraid of being a victim of crime when visiting their police station.

The DA will also request that the Western Cape Department of Community Safety put a watching brief on this case as a matter of urgency.
