Security cluster speaking with forked tongue on Nkandlagate report - Lindiwe Mazibuko

DA PL says ministers are simply trying to block release, are not motivated by legitimate security concerns

Nkandlagate: Security Cluster speaking with forked tongue

The Security Cluster briefing this morning on the reasons why they sought legal action to prevent the release of the Public Protector's Report on the Nkandlagate scandal was a poor attempt at damage control. It is also clearly in contradiction with their affidavit, as submitted to the High Court.

The Minister of Police's affidavit states that:

  • The release of the report in its current form will undermine the safety of the president;
  • Releasing the report, because of it containing classified information, is unlawful;
  • And that they would want to reserve their right to postpone the release of the report after viewing it again.

This affidavit makes it clear, despite what the Minister of Justice might say, that their actions have nothing to do with needing more time to read the report. This is about blocking its release so to prevent accountability.

As the affected party who requested this investigation, I am greatly concerned that my rights to view the report are being undermined. The DA will therefore consult with our lawyers to ascertain what steps are available to us to ensure the report is made public.

The DA will not give up the fight to ensure that all reports into this scandal are made public and considered by an open committee in Parliament. South Africa, once and for all, deserves to know how it is that over R200 million was spent on building President Jacob Zuma a palace.
