THOUSANDS of ANC supporters packed Cecil Emmet Stadium and overflowed into the nearby sporting field in Vryheid, northern KZN, to celebrate the 103rds anniversary of the ANC, thereby signifying the party's desire to take over the control of the Zululand District Municipality.

Addressing the packed gathering, ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson and KwaZulu-Natal premier, Senzo Mchunu, openly declared the party's intention to take over the district- currently governed by the coalition of the ANC and the NFP.

Mchunu described the Zululand District as an "orphan" among the provincial districts which are all controlled by the ANC. He spoke about the need to strengthen the ANC in Zululand, saying taking over Zululand was the historic mission of the ANC as it wanted to ensure the people of Zululand also enjoyed better life.

"We want to take over all the municipalities, who make up the Zululand District. This is the only way we can improve the lives of people here and ensure that the noble objectives of the Freedom Charter were also full-filled in this district," said Mchunu.

He said the objectives of the ANC in the 2016 local government elections were to defend all the wards and municipalities that it currently controlled. Mchunu also hit out at political parties which wanted to usurp the Freedom Charter and pretend as it they were the champions of the noble objectives contained in historic document produced at Kliptown in 1955.

"No one knows better about Freedom Charter than the ANC. The current government of the ANC has implemented almost all the plans outlined in the Freedom Charter. The bigger part of what is contained in the Charter is what we do today as the government", said Mchunu.

He also underlined the need  for the ANC to achieve maximum unity, saying it was only the united ANC that could successfully completed phase of transition which if focused on integrating masses into mainstream of the economy.

Mchunu described the ANC as the home for all cultures, all people, including religious, traditional and business communities. The ANC Provincial Secretary Cde Sihle Zikalala described the rally as a resounding success, saying that the number of people who attended the rally showed that the ANC was a mass based organisation which represented the interests of all South Africans.
