We reject govt's agricultural land bill - TAU SA

Bennie van Zyl says draft legislation violates property rights implies a prescriptive approach implemented by unqualified officials

TAU SA’s comments on the Draft Policy and Bill on Preservation and Development of Agricultural Land Framework

TAU SA rejects the draft policy and bill in total.

Over and above the fact that it is a direct threat to private property rights reflected in title deeds and financial bonds, it also implies a prescriptive approach as for what purpose privately owned land should be utilised. “Not only is it an irresponsible interference of a private business entity, but such decisions are usually left to officials with no understanding of agricultural production and the relevant considerations demanded by the requirement to remain a profitable entity,” says Mr Bennie van Zyl, General Manager of TAU SA.

The principles of private ownership, a free market and sustainable food production, remain the three tiers for a healthy economy which is to the benefit of the country at large. “Only then will growth be facilitated resulting in job creation and ultimately alleviation of poverty,” says Mr van Zyl.
