We've signed no settlement - NUMSA leadership

But Office Bearers will take revised offer to workers at plant level

NUMSA UPDATE ON THE ENGINEERING STRIKE

Thursday 14 July 2011

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) held a special National Executive Committee (NEC), today 13 July 2011, Vincent Mabuyakhulu Conference Centre, Newtown, Johannesburg.

The special NEC was attended by the National Office Bearers, Regional Secretaries and Chairpersons, including Bargaining representatives from all our Regions as recognised by the union's constitution. This special NEC was convened in order to allow ourselves to have an internal discussion on the new and revised offer as facilitated by Metal, Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC).

The special NEC noted with disgust the malicious propaganda spread or peddled by employers that the union has accepted and signed on a dotted line the revised offer. We want to assure our members that no offer has been signed by the leadership, and such claims by employers that we have signed should be viewed as a hoax and a worse form of Nazi propaganda.

The NEC resolved to take the new and revised offer to workers at the shopfloor or plant level to allow workers to interact and engage with the proposed settlement offer as initiated by MEIBC. This will allow the union to solicit a view or a mandate from its members on the best settlement offer by the union. This process is in line with our principle of worker control that is informed by robust engagements and underpinned by democratic decision-making.

All our structures will be convening meetings to present the new and revised offer to members. These meetings will commence as from tomorrow Friday 15 July 2011 -until- Saturday 16 July 2011. We call on all our members to attend these report back meeting in their respective regions and locals.

A Press Briefing will be held this coming Sunday 17 July 2011, starting at 12h00, NUMSA Head Office, 153 Cnr Bree & Gerard Sekota Streets, Newtown, Johannesburg, Gauteng province. The purpose of the Press Briefing will be to announce the outcomes of the mandate from workers and the way-forward on the strike.
