Wits to put security guards on buses after arson attack

26 October 2016

Johannesburg - Wits University will put security guards on its buses after protesters torched a bus on Tuesday evening, spokesperson Shirona Patel told journalists.

"Wits University is looking at its bus routes and adding security on each bus to ensure that students can commute safely between campuses."

On Tuesday evening, a Wits University bus was set alight while transporting about 15 students along Queens Road in Parktown.

"It appears as if one of them started the fire. The students smelt the petrol and saw the fire and alerted the driver. The bus driver opened the doors and students got off."

The fire spread through the bus. Nobody was hurt and firefighters put the fire out.

The university condemned such crimes.

"These are criminal acts of arson that put the lives of students and others at risk. The perpetrators should be arrested and brought to book as soon as possible,” Patel said.
