ANC saddened by killing of its ward candidate in Umziwabantu on Nelson Mandela Day

18 July 2016

The ANC has this morning learnt with shock of another killing of its ward candidate in Lower South Coast Region in Umziwabantu Municipality.

Cde Bongani Skhosana Ward One candidate in Umziwabantu Municipality was shot dead this morning while driving children to school before leaving his homestead. He was shot in the car in front of children.

The ANC Provincial Secretary, Cde Super Zuma has deplored this act and called on law enforcement agencies to increase their visibility in known hotspots and to beef up their security plans with local government elections less than two weeks ahead.

“We are concerned that as we near local government elections we are losing our ward candidates. What is more saddening is this coward act of the killing of our comrades in front of children. These acts of killings do not only undermine the democratic right of voters to elect leaders of their choice but such acts are reversing the gains we have made in stabilising the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are appealing to the law enforcement agencies to act swiftly with their investigations of all politically linked killings in order to ensure peace and stability ahead of the local government elections. We also appeal to our members to remain calm and allow police to conduct investigations,” said Zuma.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and community of Cde Skhosana and in his honour we will campaign vigorously to ensure that the ANC wins elections not only in his ward but the entire Ugu District. May his soul rest in peace,” said Zuma.

We deeply troubled by this barbaric act conducted on Nelson Mandela International Day and causing an embarrassing scene when our people are converging in different parts of our province to honour the memory of former President Nelson Mandela. The African National Congress calls on all our activists and supporters to not and never be distracted in our march to a decisive victory on the 3rd August 2016. Our sense of resilience must be driven by the courageous and fighting spirit of Nelson Mandela. Let’s vote for the African National Congress in honour of Cde Bongani Skhosana and all recently fallen cadres of our movement.

The ANC Provincial Chairperson Cde Sihle Zikalala lead ANC delegation to comrade Skhosana family to convey our deepest condolences.
