Better controls needed to avoid another horror crash - ANC WCape

Party extends condolences to family of those killed in Prince Albert Way taxi accident

ANC asks for better controls to avoid horror crashes

The ANC in the Western Cape extends its condolences to the family and friends of the victims of this morning's horror Karoo Crash that claimed the lives of at least 20 people. It also wishes the many injured a speedy recovery.

The disastrous accident near Prince Albert Way where two minibus taxis crashed into a stationary truck and trailer is the umpteenth serious smash with multiple fatalities on the so-called Road of Death stretch.

"The accident happened in the late hours after midnight, which in itself is a very dangerous period. The fact that the truck was standing at a turnoff raises many questions. The ANC will await the outcome of the investigation into the cause.

"However, more should be done to improve visibility, law enforcement, raising awareness and alertness of drivers on this road with a very bad history of crashes involving trucks and taxis. Lights should be put up at major intersections, where possible. Solar charging cat eyes and other technologies are available to assist in this regard. Otherwise slip lanes should be clearly marked with enough escape room to prevent such terrible accidents claiming too many lives in numerous road tragedies.

"Western Cape transport MEC Robin Carlisle must ensure that such a project receives the priority it deserves. He boasts with cameras and expensive equipment on other roads, but should stop expressing shock at such accidents and put in place more practical steps with better equipment to not just reduce deaths, but prevent it. One person killed in any accident, is one too many," says the ANC's spokesperson on Transport Chris Stali.
