GAUTENG IGNORES 787 CORRUPTION TIP-OFFS

The Gauteng Provincial Government has ignored 787 (48%) out of 1626 tip-offs received from the National Anti-Corruption Hotline. No feedback at all was given in these cases.

This information was disclosed by the Public Service Commission at a meeting last week of the Gauteng Legislature's Oversight Committee on the Premier's Office.

These statistics cover all tip-offs given from September 2004 to 8 October 2013.

Only 601 cases have been closed, leaving 1025 cases outstanding.

The Roads and Transport Department received the most tip-offs, but only finalized 193 (38%) out of 512 corruption cases.

The Gauteng Health Department received 152 tip-offs, and resolved 152 cases (49%).

Figures for other departments include the following:

Local Government and Housing - 124 outstanding cases out of 187.

Education - 160 outstanding cases out of 268.

Community Safety - 72 out of 105 cases outstanding.

Finance - 28 out of 39 cases outstanding.

Infrastructure Development - 25 out of 33 cases outstanding.

These are dismal statistics. It shows that the Gauteng Provincial Government is not serious in fighting corruption, despite promises by Premier Nomvula Mokonyane.

Real efforts are needed to ensure that all Gauteng corruption cases are investigated effectively.
